Intersolar Europe 2012 - Growth strategies for the global solar markets

Like in many markets worldwide solar energy is also gaining grounds in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region countries: solar thermal energy and solar power are replacing more and more the conventional energy sources (oil, natural gas). Many countries from this region as Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Saudi Arabia are working at present on subsidy programs for the solar industry while other countries, for example Morocco, have already issued a few subsidy programs.

At the same time promising and trendsetting projects are developing as the parabolic trough solar power plant "Shams Solar Power Station" in Abu Dhabi. Soon enough electricity with a capacity of 100 Megawatt will be produced here using solar thermal energy. The "Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solarpark" project, still in planning stage in Dubai, shall prospectively include solar thermal energy and photovoltaics, thus even achieving a capacity of 1.000 Megawatt. In view of the high oil prices, further development seems mapped out: "Oil prices reaching over $80 a barrel are already considered competitive", said Vahid Fotuhi, Co-Founder and President of Emirates Solar Industry Association (ESIA), though the world market prices have long been far above $100 a barrel and continue to rise. These are the best conditions for the growth of the solar industry, especially since the sunlight received by the MENA countries is ideal. It is imperative to use up to 360 days of sun a year!
